[Original Koan] |
Tai Liu, a monastic from Shu, lived among the assembly and often lamented that the Buddhadharma had become muddled and adulterated, with divergent views arising in sharp contention. He therefore said, “If, through my Chan practice, I attain genuine understanding and insight, I will not spare myself the karma of speech.” He then vowed to pay homage at Mazu’s stūpa without interruption throughout the year. One day, the stūpa suddenly emitted a white light, and he was moved to awakening. Thereafter, wherever he went among Chan monasteries, he tested the senior masters. |
As he passed before Mount Xuedou, he said, “That old fellow’s mouth is dripping with water.” When Xuedou heard this, he seemed displeased. When Tai later met Xuedou, Xuedou said, “You do not approve of this old monk?” Tai said, “That old fellow’s mouth is indeed dripping with water.” He struck his sitting cloth once and left. |
The monastery steward was indignant and had someone beat Tai on the road, crippling one of Tai’s feet. Tai said, “This was ordered by that old fellow Xuedou. One day he must break a foot to repay me.” Later, it happened just as he had said. |
After Tai arrived in the capital, he behaved freely in the marketplaces. An official invited him home to make offerings to him. Tai repeatedly asked to take his leave, but the official insisted on keeping him and treated him with ever greater reverence, often having his concubines bring food before him. One day, when the official happened to arrive, Tai deliberately flirted with one of his concubines. The official then changed his manner of reverence, and Tai was thus able to depart. A few days later, he sat upright in the busy market and passed away. |

[The Elder’s Marginal Notes] |
Do not say that the Buddhas and patriarchs lack spiritual efficacy; fear only that practitioners’ hearts are not firm and sincere! |
Xuedou, Xuedou—he still has this! |
What sort of person was this monastery steward, to resort to such a low tactic? |

There was a monastic teacher from Sichuan named Tai Liu. Seeing that the Buddhadharma had become muddled and adulterated, with everyone advancing divergent views, he made this great vow: “If, through my Chan practice, I attain genuine understanding and insight, I will not spare myself the karma of speech.” He then paid homage at Mazu’s stūpa year after year. Finally, one day, the stūpa emitted a white light, and he suddenly awakened. From then on, he went to Chan monasteries to test the old masters. Ha ha! Indeed, diligent effort does not fail one who is determined. |
The Elder sighed, “Do not say that the Buddhas and patriarchs lack spiritual efficacy; fear only that practitioners’ hearts are not firm and sincere!” Indeed! Most people today lack firmness and sincerity, yet complain that the Buddhadharma has no efficacy. They always want to buy a large color television for a penny—how could that possibly be done? |
Tai Liu came to Chan Master Xuedou and commented on him: “That old fellow’s mouth is dripping with water”—criticizing Chan Master Xuedou for talking too much nonsense. Chan Master Xuedou asked him, “You do not approve of this old monk?” He replied, “That old fellow’s mouth is indeed dripping with water.” He struck his sitting cloth once and left. |
Xuedou actually asked, “You do not approve of this old monk?” Did he expect Tai to approve of him? The Elder also criticized Xuedou: “Xuedou, Xuedou—he still has this!” What is this? It is wanting others to approve of him. Chan Master Deshan also said, “You do not approve of this old monk?” but he said it to his disciple Yantou. Tai Liu was not Xuedou’s disciple, so it was inappropriate for Xuedou to say this to Tai Liu. It exposed precisely that he still had “this”! |
When the monastery steward saw that Tai Liu did not approve of Xuedou, he was very dissatisfied. He actually gave rise to anger and had someone intercept Tai Liu on the road and beat him, crippling one of Tai Liu’s feet. Tai Liu said, “This must have been instigated by that old fellow Xuedou. Later, he must break one foot to repay me.” Later, Chan Master Xuedou indeed became crippled in one foot. |
This was all trouble that the monastery steward brought upon Xuedou. The Elder rebuked the steward: “What sort of person was this monastery steward, to resort to such a low tactic?” If others do not approve of you and you then harm them, that is of course a low tactic. If you seek others’ approval, you must be like Chan Master Baoning Yong in the preceding koan: exert yourself, establish your resolve, and improve your own qualities. That is the superior course. |
Tai Liu came to the capital and behaved uninhibitedly in the busy marketplaces. An official invited him home to make offerings to him. Tai Liu wished to take his leave, but the official treated him with even greater reverence and forcibly kept him there. Tai Liu wanted to test whether the official’s reverence was genuine, so he devised a plan: before the official’s eyes, he flirted with one of the official’s concubines. The official was displeased (he had failed the test) and instead invited other monks. Tai Liu then left the official’s home. Ten-odd days later, Tai Liu sat upright in the busy market and passed away. |
