Original Koan Text]
A master, having seen an elder monk ascend the Dharma seat and say, “While attending my teacher, I obtained the final phrase; I cannot refrain from bestowing it upon the assembly.” After a long pause, he said, “Who is one who does not keep company with the myriad dharmas? When you swallow all the water of the West River in a single gulp, I will tell you.” Then he descended from the seat.
The master said, “This mountain monk would not put it that way: ‘While attending my teacher, I obtained the final phrase; I cannot refrain from presenting it to the assembly.’” He then descended from the seat.

An old Chan master once ascended the Dharma seat to speak on Chan. This is what he said: “While attending my teacher, I obtained the final phrase; I cannot refrain from bestowing it upon the assembly.” After a long pause, he added, “Who is one who does not keep company with the myriad dharmas? When you swallow all the water of the West River in a single gulp, I will tell you.” Having said this, he descended from the seat.
Ha ha! It is called the “final phrase,” yet how can it be so muddied by all that follows?
Chan Master Dahui Zonggao said, “If it were I, I would not say it that way.” How, then, would he say it? Like this:
“While attending my teacher, I obtained the final phrase; I cannot refrain from presenting it to the assembly.” He then descended from the seat.
Chan Master Dahui vividly demonstrates this: beyond the final phrase, there is no phrase.
It is not that there can be no speaking where there is no phrase. Have we not already seen it? Chan Master Dahui spoke precisely in this way.
